Self-acting overpressure protection: held shut by a spring, opened by the process itself, needing no power, signal or operator. Inside the body, a disc is held against its seat by a spring in the bonnet, an adjusting screw setting the force, and the adjustment is sealed once set. It is installed on an inlet connection taken off the volume it protects, its outlet piped to atmosphere, a flare or a vent header. It belongs wherever a volume can be shut in with a source of pressure or heat still on it. Capacity is sized for the relieving case credited to it, and chatter is rapid cycling of the disc on and off its seat.
